Abortion myths based on fictitious stories and doctrine make life difficult for women seeking this medical procedure.

Abortion is a medical procedure that has been performed for thousands of years and has only recently become stigmatized in the 19th century and was regarded by Aristotle as a solution to stop women from having too many unwanted children.

The philosopher Aristotle wrote:

“when couples have children in excess, let abortion be procured before sense and life have begun; what may or may not be lawfully done in these cases depends on the question of life and sensation.”

Aristotle, Politics 7. 16

In the 19th century Australia’s criminalization of abortion was influenced by the English change in law. In England, the so-called ‘protection’ of women against abortion was a method for controlling women and keeping them in childbearing roles. When abortion was criminalized it was a much more dangerous procedure that is much safe today.

  1. ABORTION IS DANGEROUS

Legal abortion is usually much safer than childbirth. In fact, the risk of death associated with childbirth is approximately 14 times higher than that with abortion. More specifically, “the pregnancy-associated mortality rate among women who delivered live neonates was 8.8 deaths per 100,000 live births. The mortality rate related to induced abortion was 0.6 deaths per 100,000 abortion”

  1. MOST AUSTRALIANS ARE AGAINST ABORTION

Today the vast majority of Australians support safe, accessible abortion for all women.  In a survey, 87% of respondents indicated that abortion should be lawful in the first trimester.

Often those with very extreme views are overrepresented in the media and may mislead you to think that many people are against legal, safe abortion. The far right religious anti-abortion groups are very vocal and can make the experience harder for women experiencing the medical procedure.

  1. WOMEN WILL REGRET IT

Although abortions can be a stressful experience. This stress is ” different from believing that abortion was not the right decision,” the researchers explained. 95% of women who had abortions were found to not regret their decision in a 2013 study

  1. ABORTION CAUSES PAIN FOR THE FETUS

Fetal perception of pain is highly unlikely before the third trimester which is when majority of abortions are performed.

  1. ABORTION IS A NO-GO FOR RELIGIOUS WOMEN EXPERIENCING UNPLANNED PREGNANCIES

Most religious arguments against abortion are misguided. Those in Biblical times did not value fetuses as much as we do today. For example, read this passage from the Old Testament.

Exodus 21: 22-25

“When men have a fight and hurt a pregnant woman, so that she suffers a miscarriage, but no further injury, the guilty one shall be fined as much as the woman’s husband demands of him, and he shall pay in the presence of the judges. But if injury ensues, you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth.”

This suggests that money suffices when a miscarriage is ‘caused’, however, hurting a women is penalised with a physical punishment. This implies the feotus is not valued as highly as a live human and so the Bible is not the best argument against abortion.
